Sandy Cape

Makes you feel like you're on top of the world.

Sandy Cape is at the most northern tip of Fraser Island but when you’re there you feel like you could be at the tip of Australia.

It only takes 30 minutes to reach Sandy Cape from Orchid Beach, however, to get there you have to traverse Ngkala rocks which can be a challenge especially if the weather has been dry due to the talcum powder-like sand that forms the track behind the rocks.

Other challenges getting to the cape relate to the tide in that you must travel during low tide. To make the most out of your day, we recommend picking a day when the high tide is in the middle of the day so you can travel up on the morning low, and back in the afternoon.

There is quite a lot to do up the cape including amazing fishing, swimming (not in summer due to the jellyfish, and be aware of potential shark activity), visiting the Sandy Cape Lighthouse.

Be sure to bring everything you need, there are no facilities available for public use and if you do plan to spend the day, bring the BBQ and cook up some lunch on the beach and enjoy the peace and quiet during high tide as you know there won’t’ be any visitors arriving.

Give yourself plenty of time for the trip back to Orchid Beach as the return track over Ngkala rocks is ofter even more challenging, especially the approach ramp.
