Platypus Bay

Is this the best beach in Queensland?

One of the most spectacular beaches on Fraser Island is the little-known and infrequently visited Platypus Bay.  Platypus Bay is not always accessible due to track closures however if the track is open this is a must-see haven of sand and sun to rival the best beaches in Australia. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the bay from Orchid Beach.

The track across is fun with a small river crossing and some rutted hills to traverse. It can be challenging for first-time 4WDers so take it easy on your vehicle.

As Platypus Bay is on the western side of Fraser Island, the water is generally as calm as you can imagine. While open, vehicles can drive onto the beach, but can’t travel along the beach, so if you’re looking for your own stretch of beach with no cars and no crowds, this is the place for you.

There is good fishing to be had when the whiting are around and if you’re keen for a bit of a hike, you can head north and fish around some of the coffee rock to maybe hook a flathead.

There are no facilities whatsoever in this area so be sure to bring everything with you and take everything back when you leave.

Caution is advised in the summer months however due to the chance of Irukandji Jellyfish stings. It’s best to stay out of the water and enjoy the serenity.
