Wathumba Creek

An idealic place to explore away from the crowds

On the western side of the island, Wathumba Creek is generally always accessible and while it takes a bit of time to get there (~45 minutes) the track is smoother and easy to travel.

The creek is a wonderful place to walk around, especially at low tide. Be sure to take your fishing gear as there are flathead and bream, and if you’re into snorkeling, then this place is a mecca for shallow water diving. A canoe/kayak is also highly recommended as the creek offers quite an extensive delta for you to explore.

There are some basic bathroom facilities and a campground but no water or other facilities.  You can drive down onto the beach here however it may be challenging to get off the beach and back to the track so only access the small beach area if you are confident you can get back.

We would very much advise against driving off the soft sand onto the many small sandbanks that form as the tide goes out. We have seen vehicles become completely stuck here requiring snatch strap recovery to avoid becoming inundated with saltwater.

We helped this group out one day we were there, but we were the only other people around that day and if we hadn’t helped out their vehicle could have been lost. Check out the video.

Depending on the time of the year, there can be many sand flies and mosquitoes around so be sure to bring some insect repellant with you as it’s a long way to go to turn around if the bugs ruin your day!
