The Maheno shipwreck is one of the iconic sights to see on Fraser Island and here are our Top 5 Tips for visiting this amazing wreck.
- Time Your Visit
The best time to visit the Maheno is when there are fewer people around so you can snap some awesome people-free photos.
Tour busses will generally bring people to the wreck mid-morning, and mid-afternoon, so time your visit to be either morning/lunchtime/or afternoon. We find the best time is early morning as you get some great light. - Try to visit at Low Tide
Aside from the fact that travelling on the beach is better at low tide, the main reason for this tip is the fact that, in certain conditions, you can actually walk around the ocean side of the wreck, which offers a very unique perspective. - Park well away from the Wreck
Always remember that the beach on Fraser Island is the main road, so park well back from the wreck. Also, when walking around, keep an eye out for passing vehicles as not everyone sticks to the 40 km/h speed limit. - Take your Time
Don’t try and rush your visit as there is always plenty to do around the wreck. You can watch the sightseeing planes take off and land, or indeed take a flight. There is good fishing around the wreck also. If visiting around lunch, pack the BBQ or cooker and cook up a feast on the beach. - Take your Rubbish
This one is a little odd, however, if you’re camping on the eastern beach, you need to dispose of your rubbish at one of the transfer stations, and there happens to be one just near the wreck.
Lastly, as always, keep an eye out for dingoes, they will tend to congregate around popular tourist stops. And lastly please be respectful and follow the wreck and be sure to follow any signage posted by national parks.
